No need for million dollar boats and tackle with technology when fishing for redfish in Florida. And it is the season to fish redfish! Whether you call them red drum, channel bass, or spot tail bass, you can catch these rod-bending game fish with spinning rods, jigs, spoons, crankbaits, and cut shrimp, crab and mullet.
Fishing for Redfish
Redfish move inshore for the catch this time of year, and mostly thrive all year-round in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. Code Red Fishing Charters is fishing redfish on Moquito Lagoon this season and all year-round. Come on over to the backcountry where the water is clear and we are sight-fishing redfish.
Redfish Size and Records
Redfish make records and tip scales with a lifespan between 20 and 30 years, and a world record of 94 pounds. Redfish develop to about 12 inches in length, and weigh approximately one to two pounds during the first year of their life. During the second stage of life, redfish grow to about 20 inches long and weigh approximately two to three pounds. By three years, they grow to approximately 20 inches in length and weigh between four to six pounds. By four years of age, redfish are about 30 inches in length. At maturity, redfish can reach 50 to 60 pounds. Florida’s current state redfish record was made in Brevard County with a 52 pound bull redfish.
Baiting
Redfish are bottom feeders with a natural diet of live shrimp, minnows, mullet and menhaden. Fishing with live shrimp on a jig head or under a float produces action. You can free-line live shrimp and mud minnows in shallow water. Using a standard bottom fishing rig with live finger mullet and crabs will get desired results. Cut bait adds scenting to the scenario and amplifies results.
Artificial Bait
Artificial bait, lures and plugs can be used when baiting for redfish. Redfish lures resemble freshwater black bass lures. The artificial bait for redfish ranges from topwater to deep diving. Bait with grubs on jig heads or plastic swim tails are popular and effective. The idea is to fish with the lightest weight and still get the desired action. A favorite is a 3/8 ounce jig and a bass assassin electric chicken color swim tail.
Redfish Baiting Secrets
Baiting is a bit of a game, and requires a little technique. We always need to consider how the redfish will perceive our bait. We want to cast a lure that imitates the prey of the fish we are targeting. We need to match all aspects of the prey fish and the target fish when selecting a lure. It is a simple fact that big fish eat big bait. Behavior is an important consideration. If your lure imitates a shrimp, then we need to work the lure like a shrimp. Code Red Fishing Charters has all the technique and bait to catch redfish this season.
Season Changes and Redfish
If you are looking to hook some bull redfish, watch the calendar. Spawning season is when those mature bull redfish become an easy catch. Depending on the location, redfish migrate offshore each winter to deeper water and into the reefs. The fall migration brings them in deep channels that lead out into the ocean, living up to the term “channel bass.” During this fall migration, you'll find some of the biggest reds, and the only struggle to catch one is found in the fight at the other end of the line.
Mosquito Lagoon
Mosquito Lagoon is unique in that it is one of the few places where redfish live their entire lives, regardless of the season changes. Most redfish dwell their entire lifespans within a six mile radius of their birthplace, making Mosquito Lagoon home to some of the world's largest bull redfish. It is the season to catch heavyweight bull redfish at Mosquito Lagoon.
